Minutes:
The minutes of the regular meeting of October 16, 2003 were reviewed. S. Howe requested that the following sentence on page 1 be deleted believing it to be a mis-statement: "Kathy asked Sharon to contact the police chief regarding the haunting rumors surrounding Pine Hill Cemetery."
J. Snow moved to approve the minutes of October 16, 2003 as corrected. C. Buzzy seconded and the motion carried unanimously.
Old Business:
Dick Medlyn of Medlyn Monuments has been notified concerning the setting of new foundations for the headstones in the new two-lot section of the East Cemetery where the headstones are out of line. J. Babel of DPW was also consulted. The work was to commence this week, however, the weather is not cooperating.
K. Albee has contacted Clem Michaud to arrange for certain stones in the Churchyard Cemetery to be straightened. Funds allocated in this year’s budget but not used for regular maintenance will be used for this purpose.
The Cemetery Trustees budget for the coming year was presented to the Selectmen as scheduled.
Joan Tinklepaugh has taken the information from the list compiled last summer of stones (mostly footstones) that have been removed from their appropriate locations and placed under the Church and matched these orphan stones with their appropriate headstones. All except one stone has been matched. These footstones can now be relocated to their original gravesites. She will get the match list information to the Trustees.
S. Howe and J. Butler tried to arrange to visit the hearse house during Thanksgiving week but were unable to connect.
C. Buzzy reported that the Lawrence Cemetery has a fence problem. The gate is broken and 16 to 20 feet of fencing is either broken or needs replacing. J. Snow will inspect and recommend a course of action and get estimates.
C. Buzzy reported on a proposed plan for improvements at the Church Yard Cemetery. His handout included a plan drawing of the cemetery. The suggested improvements included clearing underbrush and vegetation from inside the stone wall on the west and about half way along the wall on the north. The vegetative buffer would remain next to the Stickney property. A new stonewall is proposed for the east side of the cemetery and the underbrush cleared from that side. A new iron gate would be installed as an entrance between the church and the east wall and a new entrance would be cut through the existing stone wall on the west side. The rocks from this break would be used to enclose the opening that now exists on the south west corner of the yard next to the church addition. The new entrance on the west would also have a new iron gate installed. The west stone wall would be repaired, the stone that have fallen off would be replaced along the top of the wall. The headstone beds that were proposed for the areas next to the flagpole may not be needed now that the misplaced footstones have been identified and their proper locations determined.
The following assignments were made to discuss this proposal with the following parties:
J. Snow will discuss plan with K. Albee; C. Buzzy will speak to Library representative, N. Bell will approach someone at the Church and S. Howe will contact the HDC.
C. Buzzy has obtained estimates for the work from Northern Lights Landscaping, NorthernView and will check with New Earth Landscaping. The trustees agreed that it would be best to complete the work in increments beginning with the brush clearing along the west stonewall. The current cemetery budget surplus needs to be checked before a final decision can be made to proceed.
There being no further business, a motion was made by N. Bell and seconded by J. Snow to adjourn the meeting. The motion carried unanimously. The meeting was adjourned at 8:02PM.
Respectfully submitted,
Sharon M. Howe, Cemetery Trustee
