Minutes May 17, 2007

Attendees: Doug Gagne - chairman, Jeff Snow and Scott Fisher

Staff: Kimberly Dogherty, secretary

Absent: Nancy Bell and Chris Buzzy

The meeting was held in the East Cemetery and was called to order at 6:04 pm.

Minutes

Jeff moved to approve the minutes of April 19, 2007 as submitted. Doug seconded and the motion carried unanimously.

Old Business

Doug reported that he had not spoken to Kevin Gardner, stonewall contractor, to discuss when the project would begin. Doug spoke to Jeff and was told that the DPW had begun bringing stones from the Walker property to Memorial Park. Doug agreed to call Kevin and let him know that they were almost ready for the project to begin.

Doug spoke to Jeff, DPW, about having them install a sign at the Churchyard Cemetery warning visitors to keep off the wall (Library side). Unfortunately the DPW does not have a sign making machine and suggested that the Trustees contact a local sign company. The Trustees were not sure any money was in the budget for the sign this year. Doug remembered Kevin stating that the wall project might come in under budget, if that was the case, they could ask him to fix the wall. The Trustees thought fixing the wall was a much better solution than a sign. The Trustees tabled this discussion until next month when they could get the opinions of Chris and Nancy.

Doug stated that there was an incident that happened in the office regarding the sale of cemetery lots. A family purchased four cemetery lots many years ago. That family then sold two of their lots to a second family. The second owner requested to sell their two cemetery lots back to the town. Deb Adams, secretary, researched the deeds and found that none existed in the second owner’s name. Deb informed the second owner that they purchased their lots illegally.

This type of sale is prohibited according to Cemetery Rules and Regulations, Section II.E, which clearly states,

"The owners of rights of burial, or their heirs, shall not grant, sell, alienate, or convey, the said exclusive right of burial to any person or persons without having first obtained the written approval and consent of the Cemetery Trustees. It shall be optional with the Trustees to grant or withhold such approval and consent."

After many discussions between all parties the second owners sold their two lots back to the original family.

New Business

Nancy contacted Kim earlier in the day and reported the following details;
